My Projects ~ Welcome to the wonderful world of electronics

HIGH VOLTAGE

The first experiment I’ll introduce is “HIGH VOLTAGE” (warning HIGH VOLTAGE is very DANGEROUS pls. do not follow unless you are with professionals).
The high voltage unit I have can produce up to 20kv (20 thousand volts). In (picture 1.1) I’ll show you my high voltage unit.

Removing the LOPT (line out put transformer) is Hard But, testing and finding primary coil and high voltage ground of the LOPT transformer is the trickiest part. In (image1.3)

Here a diagram of my circuitry, (picture 1.4). Setting the operating frequency with an integrated timer is easy and practical. The diagram is nothing more than a standard astable mode circuit design with a classic 555. It requires only two resistors and a capacitor to set frequency (with duty cycle of course) and another resistor to determine power transistor's base current, which you can find it's optimal value experimentally. I used 1K for R1, 2.2K for R2, and 10nF for C which made circuit to run nearly at 27 kHz theoretically, at %60 high to %40 low duty cycles.

New Flyback Driver

After sometime of continues operation the 555ic circuit didn’t last that long. So I have build another 555ic flyback driver more powerful and less likely to burnout diagram image 1.6

Separating the power supply for the circuit and the flyback can lessening burnouts and improving the flybacks output, input voltage to flyback from 12 to 35v, cautions! Input more voltage to flyback may cause internal arcing.

High Voltage Bottle Capacitors

One of the simplest and inexpensive high voltage capacitor is the bottle capacitor, they have a typical capacitance of 750-900pF per bottle and can withstand over 45KV. I have made some bottle capacitors my self, I use a Gatorade glass bottles because it have more surface area than other long neck bottles. Prepare the electrolyte; most people use a salt-water solution, I use salt and baking soda solution, anyway any salt or baking soda solution works as long the solvent is conductive. Here are some pictures I taken. On March 19, 2008

High voltage Plasma bulbs

After reconstructing my high voltage unit, I was able to build a plasma bulb, using an incandescent and a fluorescent bulb, here are some pictures I have taken. On March 16, 2008.

image01 glowing florescent bulb.

image01 the set up.

Using a battery powered high voltage I was just able to let the incandescent and fluorescent bulb glow dimly. On image01 and 02, I was using a dead fluorescent bulb, I haven’t posted the incandescent plasma pictures.

Microwave Transformer(MOT) High voltage

Working with a MOT is very dangerous!!!  I personally experience these. Testing the MOT(image 3.1) the wiring almost catches fire and I flip the circuit breakers 3 times, so I made ballast to limit the current to the MOT.

Neon Sign transformer (NST)

12kv solid state neon sign transformer

I was thinking whether to buy a solid state or an iron cored neon sign transformers. Turn out; solid state neon transformers can work. Thanks for watching.
